In the context of prevailing forest functions and from them resulting management methods the forests are divided into 3 categories:

• commercial forests (1 283 500 ha , 66.9%)
• special-purpose forests (341 300 ha, 17.8%) with special functions
• protection forests (294 500 ha, 15.3%) securing principle of ecological and conservation functions.

        Total growing stock in 1998 was 396.258 mil m³ of timber to the top of 7 cm o.b. without bark which represents increase by 6.258 mil m³ (390 mil m³ in 1997). Total 1998 volume of harvested timber was 5 532 thousand m³ (coniferous species - 3 214 thousand m³, broad-leaved species 2 318 thousand m³). Incidental felling reached 2 325 thousand m³ which represents 42.03% of total volume of harvested timber.
