The list of native species of plants and of animals important from the international treaties and initiatives point of view is compiled of annexes and appendices of the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (Bern Convention), the Council Directive 93/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (Habitats Directive), the Council Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds (Birds Directive), the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (Bonn Convention), the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals (1996). From this list it is possible to look for so called ”priority species” which are in the highest consideration of the international community and which need the appropriate readiness of Contracting Parties to provide relevant conservation and information on their status and threats on national level.
In all taxa of native plants and 508 taxa of indigenous species of animals of Slovakia are included at least in one of the lists of the international instruments and initiatives:
