The spatial/GIS database for the Daugava and Nemunas drainage basins (Zapadnaya Dvina/Neman)
The database assembled in the DatabasiN project has collected basic data layers for two river basins in North Eastern Europe - the Daugava/Zapadnaya Dvina and Nemunas/Neman drainage basins. These basins span the countries of Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus (and a small strip of Poland, for Nemunas/Neman. The database is intended for basin-wide watershed management, analysis and assessment reporting and collects both small-scale data, as well as data from national sources.
Partners
The database has been assembled by national parties, supported by a Swedish Expert Team, and managed by UNEP/GRID-Arendal. Please refer to the About DatabasiN page for more information, including contact details.Process
The assembling of the DatabasiN database has followed two primary approaches - the assembly of small-scale global/regional data sources prepared for this database, and secondly national contributions. For the latter, the data have been managed and harmonised by a Swedish Expert Team to form uniform and standardised data layers.
Database layers/themes
Unless otherwise noted, the layers listed below are both available for Daugava/Zapadnaya Dvina and Nemunas/Neman. For full details, please refer to the full documentation reports, and the metadata description files.- Hydrology - Basic

Data access
Map images and the interactive maps are open for unrestricted public access. This includes custom map generation.
The full final GIS database is available for download, see below.
For use of the full GIS database, please refer to the metadata of each individual layer for more information. In general most layers have the following use constraint: Not for commercial purposes (sales), data set credits must be displayed in well visible way.
Data download
Currently the final Databasin database, version 1.0, is available for download in one full archive, the full CD version that was prepared by the project consortium.
Please refer to the metadata for the layers for details on use and access constraints.
Note that the v1.0 version of the database contains a supplement in the form of water discharge and wastewater measurements from the Russian counterpart.

Full documentation, and metadata (data descriptions)
The data assembled in the DatabasiN database is thoroughly described in two documents, prepared by the Swedish Expert Team, with input from the national parties and UNEP/GRID-Arendal:
- The pilot database document, documenting the assembly of small-scale data for the initial execution of the project. This is data from global and regional sources. The document was prepared by the Swedish Expert Team (Dorothy Furberg and Sindre Langaas). Download the report "Preparation of a Pilot Multi-thematic GIS Database covering the Transboundary Daugava/Zapadnaya Dvina and Nemunas/Neman River Basin Districts in the Framework of the DatabasiN Project" (1 MB pdf file).
- The final database document, documenting the harmonisation of the submissions from the national parties in the project. The document was prepared by the Swedish Expert Team (Moa Holmlund and Fredrik Hannerz). Download the report "Nemunas/Neman and Daugava/Zapadnaya Dvina GIS-database - Layer Documentation" (4.5 MB pdf file).
Outputs
A series of map images have been prepared from the assembled database, which are available for download, printing and inclusion in reports. Please refer to the maps page for further information.
In addition, interactive maps are set up for the two basins, which feature the database (with some minor exclusions). Please refer to the interactive maps page for further information.
Status
The first version of the DatabasiN database is assembled, and there are currently no ongoing activities in updating and expanding it.
- December 2007 - v1.0 of the DatabasiN database
