The spatial/GIS database for the Dniester river basin

Examples of maps from the Dniester GIS project

The database assembled in the Dniester GIS project has collected basic data layers for the drainage basin. This basin spans Ukraine and Moldova (including a small strip of Poland). The database is intended for basin-wide watershed management, analysis and assessment reporting and collects both small-scale data, as well as data from national sources.

Partners

The database has been assembled by national parties, supported by UNEP/GRID-Arendal. Please refer to the About Dniester GIS page for more information, including contact details.

Process

The assembling of the Dniester GIS database has followed two primary approaches - the assembly of small-scale global/regional data sources prepared for this database, and secondly national contributions.

Database layers/themes

Please note that a few of these layers only cover one national party. For full details, please refer to the full documentation reports, and the metadata description files.

Data access

Map images and the interactive map are open for unrestricted public access. This includes custom map generation.

The full final GIS database is available on request, see below.

For use of the full GIS database, please refer to the metadata of each individual layer for more information. In general most layers have the following use constraint: Not for commercial purposes (sales), data set credits must be displayed in well visible way.

Data download

Currently the final Dniester GIS database, version 0.1, is only available upon request. Please refer to the About Dniester GIS page for contact detail

Full documentation, and metadata (data descriptions)

The data assembled in the Dniester GIS database is in the process of being documented. To date, the available documentation is:

Full metadata will be made available in the spring of 2009. Currently the metadata xml-files for the top-down database is available, please refer to the metadata page.

Outputs

A series of map images have been prepared from the assembled database, which are available for download, printing and inclusion in reports. Please refer to the maps page for further information.

In addition, an interactive map have been set up which feature the database (with some minor exclusions). Please refer to the interactive map page for further information.

Status

The first version of the Dniester GIS database is assembled, but will be expanded and revised in the spring of 2009.
