In the field of agricultural production, the considerable decrease of the fertilisers use has led to the reduction of their accumulation in soil. Hence, soil contamination and its contribution to the contamination of water resources (surface and ground waters) was reduced as well. Another factor that has contributed to the lessening of pollution from agricultural activities is the rather low level of pesticides use in the last years, mainly due to the little concern shown by the farmers and the generally restricted possibilities for elimination of agricultural crop damagers. Thus, a reduction of soil contamination level from pesticide tracks has been observed. However a critical environmental issue is the presence of inherited pesticides which are located and deposited in all country districts. By the end of 1993, there were about 2700 ton of used pesticides derived from the fund of the ex-agricultural co-operatives and enterprises or pesticides not used in their appropriate time. Out of this amount, 465 ton stocks of pesticides on the eve of expire had come during 1991-1992 under aid disguise from the former Eastern Germany and were deposited mainly in Bajza station (Shkoder) and Milot. At the continuos insistence of the Committee of the Environmental protection and at the support of the environmental organisation of the Green Peace, the German Ministry of Environment took the responsibility to undertake actions and allocate a fund for the pesticide repackaging and their return to Germany, in co-operation with the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture and food. Thus, by the end of October 1994, these pesticides were taken away from Albania, avoiding a danger to the whole country. Still in the end of 1994, about 1500 ton of pesticides were in the country, not including here another amount of 600 ton from the Chemical Enterprise in Durres (wastes from lindan production). Although a part of these of pesticides can still be used, in compliance with the relevant technical conditions, their slow consumption and especially the existence of a large amount of expired pesticides are a matter of environmental concern, which requires a continuous and serious commitment by the organisations and institutions that possess and manage them. An adverse phenomenon that should be impeded is the privatisation of pesticide warehouses which may cause environmental pollution or be misused by the new owners if their destination is changed.
