At the end of the 20th century the situation in the Central Asian region is getting worse: intensive melting of glaciers, shortage of fresh drinking water, soil salinisation, withdrawal of fertile and watered lands from crop rotation, the Aral Sea drying off, desertification, deforestation and disappearance of unique biodiversity. These phenomena are reflected negatively on the living standards of the population, difficulties with water, food and housing.
The burden of the Aral Sea crisis lies on the Central Asian states. Along with international organisations and funds they do their best to eliminate its consequence.
Much attention is paid to the improvement of the access of the population to information on the state of the environment.

Much attention is paid to the improvement of the population access to information on the state of the environment, dynamics of ecological development in the Central Asian region, formation of public opinion on rational water use.
Ten paramount problems, devoted to environment state assessment of the Central Asian states, are included into this electronic report. They are regarded at global, regional and national levels. The following chapters of each topic are discussed: "State", "Pressure" and "Response". The materials of regional level are made up and generalised on the basis of the national reports of the Central Asian states.
I am sure that this information will contribute to population's awareness on the state of the environment in the countries of the Aral Sea basin, the creation of the Regional Ecological Information Systems in the Central Asian states, the dynamics of ecological development in the Central Asian region, and the formation of public opinion on rational water use.
