The total area of Forest Estate of Armenia amounts for 484,1 thousand ha, of which 423.8 thousand ha belong to State Forest Estate. Total Forest Estate occupies some 407.3 th.ha, of which 334.1 th.ha is covered by forest, while other 176.2 th.ha are treeless. The average forest area per Armenian inhabitant is only 0.1 ha, while for CIS this figure reaches for 2.7 ha. The mean density of Armenian forests is 0.52, that is the edge after which forests usually lose their regeneration features and protection significance. Forest covers 11.8% of the territory of Armenia, while the protected areas. occupy 0.7% of national area. 1/3 of forests have mean density 0.4, the other 25% (7.2 th.ha ) have high density.

The distibution of area covered by forest according to its density (th.ha) looks as follows:

Due to intensive forest utilization in past 10 years, some 26.2% of beech forest became converted to coppice forest and currently only 10.3% of beech forest is reported to have high density. In the most critical conditions are oak forests represeted by mature and over-mature trees for 31.3%.

The average density in oak forests is 0.49, approximately 1.3% of which are of high density and 4.5% have low density.

Besides, the age structure of forests (average age - 90 years, pre-mature trees amounts for 6.5% of total) has a negative impact on future development of forest resources in the country.
