Transboundary transport

Transboundary pollution is an essential factor with a detrimental effect on the state of ambient air in Belarus. Peculiarities of Belarus's geographical position as well as predominance in the Western winds contribute to the fact that our country is one of the most polluted European countries due to transboundary transport. According to the model calculations of the EMEP program every year on the Belarusian territory precipitate:

  • 180 - 190 thousand tons of sulfur with Belarus's own share of 15 percent;
  • 60 - 70 thousand tons of oxidized nitrogen with 8% of the country's own;
  • 150 - 170 thousand tons of restored nitrogen where a 50 per cent share go to Belarus.

Apart from Belarus the main contributors to transboundary sulfur compound pollution are Poland, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Rumania, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Lithuania (fig).

Of all the nitric dioxide precipitates 23,5 per cent go to Poland, Russia's share amounts to10,5 %, Germany has a 9,8 per cent share, Ukraine 5,7 %, western European countries 29,7 %, Lithuania and Latvia 3,8 %, Slovenia and Rumania 3 %.

The portion of ammonia pollution is presented in the fig.
