Industrial and household waste

The amount of waste generated in the Republic of Belarus keeps growing. If in 1995 waste generation equaled to19.3 million tons, than in 2001 it has already reached 24.5 million tons. At the end of 2001 its total amount was 723.1 million tons.

Increase in waste generation mainly stems from the rise in high-waste generating production, in particular, at the industrial complex “Belaruskaliy” and the Gomel chemical plant.

Hazardous waste (some 20 % of the total waste generation) is partially used, and the remaining 80% per cent are stored at the disposal sites for industrial and household waste.

Sludge from wastewater contains toxic substances, for this reason it is accumulated in special sludge reservoirs or ponds.
