In 2001, a total of 527 418 ha was included in the network of protected territories of Bulgaria (protected by legistlation). Since of the beginning of 1991, the coverage of the protected territory has increased almost twice. The main reasons are the establishment of new protected territories and increasing the area of the existing areas.
