Total waste generation and GDP
GDP is presented in USD due to the denomination of the BGL /Bulgarian leva/ in 1999.
Figure 1 illustrates the GDP and total waste generation trends for the period 1998 to 2001. A slow GDP increase was observed in 2001, while the quantity of total waste generated has been reduced due to a notable decrease in the mining and quarrying waste generation in the last few years. According to the NSI data the quantities of waste resulting from mining and quarry decreased from 210 million tons in 1998 to 78 million tons in 2001 and their average annual quantity represents 91 % of the total waste generated for the period.
1.a. Total waste generation and GDP /excluding waste resulting from exploration, mining, quarrying and treatment of minerals/
GDP is presented in USD due to the denomination of the BGL /Bulgarian leva/ in 1999.
Figure 1a shows the total waste generation excluding waste resulting from exploration, mining, quarrying and treatment of minerals /chapter 01 of EWC/. The figure highlights that the total waste generated appears to be stable across the years 1998 to 2001 excluding the above mentioned waste type. The graph’s tenor in this case is mainly determined by the quantity of industrial non-hazardous waste – in average annual quantity of 8.5 million tons.
