Hazardous waste

Data on hazardous waste excludes waste resulting from exploration, mining, quarrying and treatment of minerals.

The European Waste Catalogue (Decision 94/3/EC and Decision 94/904/EC) is adopted as national legislation since 1998.

Data on hazardous waste is based on around 2 000 annual reports produced by the enterprises generating and/or treating hazardous waste.

The total waste generation appears to be stable since 1999, as illustrated in Figure 5. According to the available information the average quantity of waste generated is annually 0.8 million tons for the period 1998-2001. Thirty enterprises generate over 90% of the annual quantity of hazardous waste.

The main method for hazardous waste treatment is disposal - the average quantity of waste disposed is annually 450 000 tons for the period 1998-2001. Around 77% of the total amount of hazardous waste is disposed in landfills on site of the enterprises. The analyses show that most of these sites have exceeded their capacity and do not comply with the requirements laid down in the national waste legislation that is harmonised with the requirements of the respective EC directives.
