Air Pollution from Stationary Sources

Major polluters of the atmosphere from the stationary sources are the oil refineries, energy sector, industrial facilities of metallurgical, chemical and construction sectors. Country's 9 largest industrial facilities were responsible for 80 % (148,594 tones) of total emissions of harmful substances (185,816 tones) into the air in 1992. These facilities are:

  1. Gardabani Power Plant (25.5%)
  2. Batumi Oil Refinery (3.3%)
  3. Rustavi Metallurgical Factory (20%)
  4. Rustavi Plant “Azoti” (2.1%)
  5. Rustavi Cement Plant (4.8%)
  6. Zestaponi Plant of Ferrous Compounds (2.0%)
  7. Kaspi Cement Plant (18.7%)
  8. Kutaisi Automobile Factory (3.3%) and
  9. Tbilisi "Tsentroliti" Factory (0.7%).

In 80-s one of the important sources of air pollution has been the Tkvarchweli Power Plant, but due to the fuel supply shortages the plant ceased its operations since 1991. Among other major polluters the Gardabani Power Plant, Rustavi Metallurgical Factory and Kaspi Cement Plant were responsible for the largest portion (63.2 %) of the emissions into the air basin.
