

Apart from institutional build-up the World Bank/GEF funded Georgia's ICZM Program is also concentrating on the capacity building activities through an array of training, workshops and seminars in the field of ICZM and other related subjects. In addition, several studies were conducted to identify the priority coastal environmental problems (for instance, Rioni river reconnaissance mission, eco-audit of the Batumi Oil-Refinery, an outstanding example of environmental mismanagement). Two new study components has recently been initiated: Paliastomi Lake ecosystem study and the Rioni river basin "hot spots" study, both with substantial public participation activities planned and both coordinated by local Georgian experts.
