The data presented in current report allows drawing some conclusions either concerning the state of environment or activities to stop its degradation in the Republic of Moldova.

The actual changes of the environment quality have an ambiguous character. On one hand, certain improvement of air quality and decrease of chemical contamination of soils and food-staff are registered.  On other hand, pollution of underground water, soil erosion and degradation progress.  Biological resources, especially forestry resources and hunting fauna, are under permanently increasing threat.

These phenomena are being caused, first of all, by the economic slump, structural changes of economy, lack of investments in the environmentally sound activities.

In spite of social-economic difficulties, which the country faces at the moment, there were undertaken a considerable number of activities addressing environment pollution and degradation.  During last years the legislative and normative framework was considerably upgraded. A more efficient system of environmental management was created, including certain elements of economic mechanism of management. Environmental policies and strategies are being adjusted to new conditions of market economy.  In the same time, considerable financial resources were allocated to construction of drinking water supply systems and natural gas supply pipelines.

Thus, we hope that this will lead to healthier environment and will create necessary premises for the Republic of Moldova on the way to Sustainable Development.
