Successful projects in the framework of the Danube basin and Black Sea basin programmes

After 1992, in the framework of the Environmental programme in the Danube basin, the following have been developed:

  • feasibility studies on the main Romanian rivers (Siret, Prut, Tarnave etc) to identify the hot-spots;
  • supply of equipment to laboratories within ICIM and “Romanian Water Authority” – Craiova and Constanta branches;
  • elaboration of methodologies for water sampling and analysis of samples;
  • PIAC development (including the necessary equipment and a forecast model describing the propagation of pollution waves).
  • elaboration of the Strategic Action Plan for the Danube river basin (adopted in Bucharest in December 1994).
  • elaboration of a project on wetland reconstruction in the lower Prut river basin.

Within the framework of the Programme to abate pollution in the Danube river basin, at national level, a report has been drawn up intended to identify the main necessary investments, divided into three categories: industry, agriculture and municipalities. Proceeding from the results of this project, a new GEF financed project has been proposed aiming to reduce the amounts of nutrients in the Danube basin water.

The Environmental Management Programme for the Black Sea was developed in 1993-1996 and completed by the signing of the Strategic Action Plan for the Black Sea.

The Programme aimed at the development and implementation of the Strategic Action Plan for the Black Sea has as a main purpose to draw up and implement Strategic National Action Plans in the Black Sea region. Within the framework of this project the following actions have been carried out.

  • National Strategic Action Plan for the Black Sea (project not approved yet).
  • Two PHARE projects associated to the GEF programme;
  • To assist the activity of the Regional Fishing Activity Centre (methodologies to assess the condition of living resources, management procedures for fishing and aquaculture according to EU standards)
  • Support for the Chemical Black Sea Monitoring (training to ensure the quality of data)
