Protected areas

Nature reservations (zapovedniks). “Tigrovaia balka” nature reserve is located on the south of Tajikistan. It embraces inundated tugai forests of the lower reaches of the rivers Vaksh and Pianj. The area of nature reservation is 49,9 thousands ha. At present, the tasks of reservation include protection and restoration of some species of animals and plants. “Romit” nature reservation is located in the Central Tajikistan. It covers the lower reaches of the rivers Sarbo and Sardai Migna, the main tributaries of the Kafirnigan river. The territory of nature reservation is situated between the rivers Sarbo and Sardai Migna and make up 16 thousands ha. “Romit” nature reservation is estableshed for the protection and restoration of the moutain coniferous, broad-leaved forests, etc. “Dashtijumsky” nature reservation is located on the southern slope of Darvazsky ridge (right bank of the Pianj river). The area of nature reservation is 19,7 thousands ha. The population of markhor, snow leopard, Siberian ibex inhabit here. Unfortunately, at present, all above mentioned zapovedniks have poor efficiency and reside in the zone of armed hostilities.
Nature refuges (zakazniks). In Tajikistan 14 nature refuges are established. These are: Zorkulsky, Muzkolsky, Pamirsky, Sanglyarsky, Karatau, Komarou, Chil-dukhtaronsky, Sarikhosorsky, Iskanderkulsky, Dashtimaidonsky, Saivatinsky, Zeravshansky, Kusavlisaisky, Aktashsky. Total area of nature refuges is 830 thousands ha. Unfortunately, the armed hostilities (1992-1996) and the financial impoverishment of environmental management institutions have considerably disturbed the normal functioning of nature protected territories listed above, what distinctly and nigatively affects the state of biodiversity.
National parks. Pamirsky national park was established in the Central Tajikistan in 1992-1993. It includes mountain ridges, rivers, forests, lakes, cliffs, largest mountain-mainland glaciation. The vertical altitudes fluctuate from 1700 to 7000 m above sea level. Shirkensky national park is located on the southern slopes of Gissarsky ridge (near the Dushanbe city - capital of Tajikistan).
