Nature
Among large diversity of geomorphologic natural memorials it is difficult to distinguish the most significant one. Shirkent-river canyon is distinguished for its specific splendour. Shirkent valley is stretched strictly along meridian. The middle flow of the river runs via narrow canyon, and in upper lateral watersheds recedes, forming wide valley. Aside from the baroque rock shapes, formed by way of weathering processes, in Shirkent valley there is a lot of other picturesque natural objects. Here you can see picturesque cavern Medrese-kamar, looking outside as typical shallow cavern, but inside expands up to 40 meters with the arch’s height reaching 16 meters. The cavern volume increases continuously. Tracks of dinosaurs, plants and mollusks of ancient period can be found in Shirkent valley as well. Dinosaur’s footprint is a very rare thing. On Shirkent territory you can see the footprints of three different periods. Tracks of dinosaurs like bear's footprints, but much bigger. Here the ancient camp of humans is situated, believed to date 10-12 thous. years ago. In the Central Tajikistan there are cliffs reminding Shirkent, but having their own attributes. This are red cliffs Childukhtaron. On the Eastern Pamir nearby Rangul and Shorkul lakes you can see Matatash-cavern. The cavern is located in the middle part of the cliff at the altitude of about 230 meters from the earth surface. A lot of archeological, speleological and tourist's expeditions could not subdue this difficult cavern. On the south of Tajikistan there are open salt formations biggest in former Soviet Union. Salt dome Khoja-mumin is a major salt deposit.
There are the signs of cosmic origin in Tajikistan. These are two craters situated on Pamir. The most known crater is called Murgabski. Its depth is about 20 meters and diameter is up to 300 meters. Crater is situated 40 km away from Murgab-city, alongside the river Axu. Marvelous and highest waterfall in Tajikistan is situated several hundreds meters below lake Iskanderkul. Special watch site has been constructed near the waterfall. The height of the waterfall is about 44 meters. Several kilometers away from the lake Iskanderkul you can see an ancient alpine dike, damming river Yagnob. In this place the river flows down under the alpine dike’s body and becomes visible 200 meters further in the form of rushing flow. Another natural objects are not less beautiful - these are the springs and mineral water sources. The most of mineral water sources are situated on the territory of Pamir. Here even valleys of mineral waters can be found. Many mineral water sources are used for medical purposes. On the south there is a wonderful source called Chiluchor-chashma. Amid a southern wilderness you can see a green oasis fed by the water of this source. The water-spring makes its way through the cracks of small rock, flows for the space of dozen meters and disappears in sands.
