The basin of the Amu Darya is located between 34° 30 ' - 43° 45 ' North latitude and 56° 15 ' - 75° 7 ' East longitude in territory of the Republic of Afghanistan, Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
The Amu Darya is formed by confluence of the Pyandge (Afghanistan) and Vahsh (Tadjikistan) rivers. It accepts inflows along the first 180 km of its length (Kunduz, Kafirnighan, Surkhandarya, Sherabad), further on an extent more than 1200 km up to confluence with Aral Sea there are not inflows. The waters of the Zaravshan and Kashkadarya rivers, that in accordance with the hydrographic indicators belong to the Amu Darya basin , do not reach it, and can be considered as the independent rivers. The total catchment area of the Amu Darya basin is 227800 sq. km, 61 % of which is located in republics of Central Asia and 39 % in Afghanistan.[Up]
