Map of the ecosystems of Uzbekistan
In distribution of the area of forestry land on zones the dominant role belongs to forestry in sand areas, in a smaller degree to mountain forestry and insignificantly to lowland forestry and reverine forestry. Natural vegetation and the forests currently occupy 85 % of desert and steppe area, 13 % of mountains, and in valleys and on flood-land areas, which originally were well covered, only 2% remains.
Flora of Uzbekistan is represented by at least 4800 species of vascular plants which belong to 650 genera and 115 families. Endemism rate is rather low and equals 8 % (or 400 species) of the total number of species. Relict endemic species count 10 to12 % of all endemics.
The biological diversity of Uzbekistan includes more than 27 000 species, among these animals are represented by over 15 000 species, while plants, fungi and algae total about 11 000 species.
Of invertebrates arthropods constitute the largest group. The majority of species belongs to insects among which 7 large oders are outstanding for species diversity ranging from 400 to 3000.
Vertebrates are represented by 5 classes comprsing 664 species.
Uzbekistan is a valuable habitat for endemic animal species of the Central Asian origin. Several species originated and evolved in the area between the Amudarya and the Syrdarya and expanded to other the Central Asia regions.
So far, vertebrates known to be endemic to Uzbekistan and Central Asia include 53 species and subspecies. Endemism rate among fishes is as high as 52%.
