Between 25 July – 2 August, 2002 UNEP/GRID-Arendal, in cooperation
with the Russian Association of Indigenous People (RAIPON), conducted a media
tour of two regions in the Russian Federation – the Evenkia Autonomous Region in
Krasnoyarskiy Krai (Siberia) and the Bikin River region of Primorskii Krai (Far
East).

The tour, which was conducted within the framework of GA and RAIPON's
'Health and Environment' project, had two objectives:

  • to investigate and draw international attention to the problems
confronting indigenous populations in two Russian regions; and

  • to examine RAIPON's institutional capacities and relations with
    local chapters.

The fundamental goal of the media tour was realized: the situation of the
Evenks and the Udege has been the subject of four substantial articles in
international publications.  Two articles by Paul Brown appeared
in The Guardian and two articles by Coen von Zwol appeared in
NRC Handelsblad, accompanied by a number of
high quality photographs, including one that ran on the newspaper's front page
(links cannot be provided here because NRC Handelsblad's web site does
not publish articles).
